It was a 2 reeler meant to make money in a bad economy. Admittedly, some movies tested the limits and succeded (though mostly in later, not in the box office receipts at the time) "Citizen Kane" "Ivan the Terrible" come to mind immediately.Sometimes, movies meant to be memorable were and are and they made money. . . "Gone With the Wind", "Apocalypse Now", "Godfather","Manchurian Candidate" and many more.
But "Starwars" was only a dream of an adolescent's adventure and it changed film for 3 decades.
As for "Bladerunner" . . . now often called one of the most influential films since 1970 . . . dismissed at the time . . .but it works. I am proud to say I got it immediately, false ending notwithstanding. Things work in marvelous ways. And, perhaps, in ways we do not always perceive in "real time".

Meant to put that in quotes,i.e.,"lower echelon"; quotation marks in this context meant to convey putative, unwarranted condescension of "higher-up"
business(studio) types toward artists. This may be presumptive on my part,
however, feel free to correct me. ~AH
