Rodney Dangefield, dead, this afternoon.
Follow Ups:
DUI,I know it not popular to criticize dead celebrities, but I never enjoyed Dangerfield's agitated, lumpen style of comedy. I understand he was continuing the grand old Borcht-belt tradition, "Take my wife- please" and there is something for tradition, but a catch phrase and one liners in a string is not enough. For me, his pop-eyed restlessness becomes fatiguing really quickly.
And that goes double for you Benny Hill!
Aside: A woman friend, against her instincts, went on a "date" with Dangerfield perhaps 20 years ago and had a poor experience. Somehow in the first hour or two the term "golden showers" came up and this spoiled the dinner for some reason.
But, I'm sure Dangerfield will have his retrospective at the Whitney the way things are going in this country.
Cheers,
Bambi B
PS- say Dui, if it's not a sore subject, where have been just when Outside needs you the most?
I am glad your woman friend got out unscathed.M.C.P.
Thank you for asking. Sorry it took so long to respond, I had forgotten about my post.
I would love to answer Outside, but I am banned. See my many posts there opposing the war, calling it a mistake, and questioning one particular's poster's assertions re Bush's WMD and Saddam. Everything I predicted turned out to be correct, BTW.In fact, Clark here, rather than list one factual error in Farenheit 911, falsely posted on Outside that I had been causing trouble here. Maybe for him. Anyway, I am not welcome Outside. I was found guilty of premature morality.
DUI,Well, she has apparently never forgotten this incident as she revived it when Dangerfield died- that's about 22 years of being moderatly well offended! I think woman take even offhand, 'humourous' comments more seriously than men when there's a sexual content. I'm not a prude, but there's a difference in public and private behaviour and things said to a long time friend and a new acquaintance.
Outside: I am a faithful lurker still, and amazed that the bitterness - and corresponding skewed justifications and asounding 'facts' thrown about. The nearer the election, the worse and more bizarre. And, I wonder how many of those reading and writing there have ever had an opinions changed? If the enormous intelligence and effort expended on 'Outside' were civilly presented and fact-based, think how much more usefully all that time would be wasted!
I guessing clark must be upset over those here that praise Moore's F 9/11 and for him are tipping the 'balance' on Films towards something too political.
Cheers,
Bambi B
the "lies" in F911, yet no Neocon has ever posted one. Very revealing. Everyone says "over there, the lies are just over there". But never what the "lies" are. Speaks volumes. And it is a "documentary", of course.
The guy's still warm and you're spreading the worst kind of filth about him.
For God's sake, have a modicum of respect for the dead.
tinear,I apologize to Dangerfield fans offended by my comments. I'd hoped nt to make a fuss.
Americans do seem unusually defensive of celebrities they don't know!
However, I am not sentimental about celebrities when they die and though their death usually causes me to look again at their history, my opinion is not likely to alter too much.
For example, Princess Diana, who in my opinion was a vaccous, clothes hanger parasite was given sainthood and million of worthless commemorative plates on the basis of dying young in a greasy Parisian tunnel while dating a greasy M.E. playboy.
Bob Crane- "Colonel Hogan" was murdered and was heavily publicized to have some unattractive personal habits- a movie was made about this- "Autofocus". A tragedy of a personality that succumbed to addiction, but it does not stop me from really objecting to the inanity of trivializing POW life in a sitcom.
William Kapell, who actually contributed something to the World, died in a plane crash in his early 30's and in my opinion is still the greatest pianist the US has produced. His early tragic death dis not change this opinion. His commemorative plates are 12" in diameter and made of vinyl- and precious.
That Dangerfield claimed he "don't get no respect" and offends my friend by treating her as an object, suggesting sexual humiliation is is worthy to note as a way to maintain perspective. Someone who says in effect, "I'm paying for dinner so I should be allowed to piss on your tits" suggests that respect or lack thereof may at least in part derive from respecting - or not respecting others.
By this kind of incident, a little insight into personality is gained when I don't know someone personally- helps cut through the "spin".
Of all things, dying reqires the least talents nd does not change history.
You are all invited to dance on my grave when the time comes.
Cheers,
Bambi B
They are dead.
> > > Somehow in the first hour or two the term "golden showers" came up and this spoiled the dinner for some reason < < <That's because you are suposed to wait untill *after* dinner for the Golden Showers.:-)
Jack
Jack G,The description of this dinner was priceless. I have occassionally gone to dinner with someone who is recognized in public and it's a very odd feeling to be inspected by other diners as an appendage!
As someone from "out of town", and a mere sprout at the time, this was the first I had ever heard the term "golden showers". I thought at first it was some kind of sudden bestowing of numerous, expensive gifts, but then I found out the "gift" is easily available, portable, and as cheap as they come! Doesn't even come with a "get dry soon" card..
Cheers,
Dangerfield is like the 3 Stooges. The sexes are generally divided on their merits. Men enoy them, women don't. No, not 100%, but I bet it's about 90%."You get a free bowl of soup with this hat? Oh, but it looks good on you."
"When I was born the doctor slapped my mother."
"The last time I saw a mouth like that it had a hook in it."
every Sunday I take my family out for a push." R.D.
he took me to my house. My wife likes to talk to me during sex. Last night she called me from a hotel.
When I was a baby, I wanted to breast feed. My mother said she liked me as a friend.
And on and on. Classic.
Troy,I like your observation of the Stooges and Dangerfield demographics.
Dangerfield did say many things funny as hell- the ones you quote are excellent.
I guess I tend more towards the modern trend of developing a theme and building absurd insights to an overall funny event rather than the serial one-liner style. With Rodney, there are so many rapid changes of image, metaphor, and juxtaposition, it becomes..
Oh no, I'm starting to sound like my mother was an FM radio!
Gosh, I've coming down with a case of "dangerfield" myself! I'd better go..
Cheers,
i'd trade 10 bambi bs for rodney(and benny)to return
any reason to be so mean? To someone who seems so nice?
notvinally,Well, one Rodney Dangerfield and a Benny Hill equals ten Bambi Bs just in terms of weight!
I am sorry if my criticisms have upset you enough to disguise your identity and wish for my death ten times over. I don't take this especially personally, as I see how grief for the loss of a celebrity can affect some who identify with them remotely, but please remember that an anonymous, personal attack on another's opinion does nothing to enhance the memory of someone whose work you claim to like.
I find it fair in the context of this forum to say that- even though he has died- I did not enjoy Dangerfield's humour or manner and in his personal life there were subtle signs he did not offer much that was attractive. If your opinion differs, I would enjoy examples to demonstrate otherwise. I'm not a conservative and therefore open to new ideas.By the way, the kay marked "Shift"on your computer keyboard provides capital letters at no extra charge.
Have you ever heard of the respect due to other people thinking?
Grins
What a comic genius this guy was. Thanks for the laughs, and long live Rodney!
