This Argentinian hit was recently remade in the U.S. as "Criminal" (supposedly note-for-note), which is how I found out about it. Two con men join together for a once in a lifetime opportunity ...As a big fan of David Mamet films like the Spanish Prisoner, I liked this one for its escalating twists, although I thought it pushed believability in the last lap.
Anyone had a chance to compare Criminal to Nine Queens?

Follow Ups:
...where the US remake is as good (and in some respects better) as the foreign original. Much better than the remake, for instance, of Open Your Eyes, which became Vanilla Sky.Criminal's not note for note the same as Nine Queens, but near enough. The cast, BTW, is excellent.
I should also warn you that I love con films - The Grifters, House of Games, Croupier, et al.
the question for me is, was the US remake necessary or worth watching if you've already seen the original? vanilla sky had a couple advantages over the original, like the scene with an empty times square. otherwise, i didn't think it was really necessary to remake. roger ebert once suggested, why doesn't hollywood remake bad films into good ones instead of trying to remake stuff that's already good?albee -- it's people like you responsible for hollywood remaking films that don't need to be remade. :-(
harmonia -- you are speaking my language. i love con films too!! david mamet, the jim thompson novel adaptations, etc. give us a list so i can catch the con films i've missed!!!
here's a good con film you may have missed by one of this board's favorite directors, claude chabrol -- rien ne va plus (US title: the swindle). it's got chabrol's flair for interesting characters, which is why i like it. i don't think it's out on dvd yet. i'll try to think of other suggestions ...

Particularly recycles of our own making. There is a viable reason for foreign remakes but as far as Nine Queens is concerned, I found it boring. (This from a guy who reads a hell of a lot of subtitles.)
The English language reuires the use of CAPITAL LETTERS. If you use the shift key you too can do it. C'mon, it's not that difficult and you'll come across as FAR more intlligent.
rico -- you're old enough to know that all criticism require tact.if you talk down to another person or act like a smart ass, the listener is never going to take your advice.
moreover, now that you've shown me up in a public forum, if i start using capital letters, i'm just going to look very foolish.

I did come across the wrong way and I do apologize. I enjoy reading your posts but just find them a bit difficult to read.
I'll try to do better, rico. You've been posting for a long time here, so you're cool with me.

You are a gentleman, sir. Thanks and regards, rico.
But couldn't get to the end of it. There's something about Spanish/Hispanic movies that completely bores me. Maybe it's the pace or I'm just too ethnocentric, dunno.
