This really one big film, meant to be seen together or at least within a short time of each other. I recall when it came out in its very first video incarnation this was not clear and many renters came back for "Manon" only to find that it was out.The story is a dieliberately paced tale of two generations of rival families in rural France early in the 20th century. Like "Chinatown", the plot revolves around water, its availablity, and the consequences of a dry spell. There is a huge surprise at the end only vaguely alluded to in the build up.
The current DVD's have cleaerer sub-titles than the laserdisc but you have to manipulate your screen shape to get at them.
Follow Ups:
Back in '86 I saw JdF at the old Coral Gables Fine Arts Theatre. The screen was large and *even better* they served microbrew on tap! An unforgettable experience, especially as I had just consumed an excellent Cuban meal. When Manon came out I saw it at the old Nickelodeon in Boston, again a big screen but *no beer*. After it was over I led the applause and most of the audience joined in -- love it when that happens. I turned to the guy next to me and remarked, "Now that was a movie!" He replied, "Ah, oui monsieur, oui monsieur!"
Big scandal in France, few days ago.
He was a pedophile.
I suppose you are talking about the remake?
and I thought our actors were swine.
I've had the vids for over ten years. (Manon des Sources, in french).I am getting so old that I can no longer watch these gut-wrenching masterpieces.
I was writing about the 1986 films. Are there others?

I hd not heard. Wasn't the one with Gerard Depardieu (the man with a ham for a face) the original? It was WONDERFUL!
That a film based on the novel of Jean Giono ( wonderful writer, from the Provence, in fact the best in my view, he live where L´Occitane products are made ( hehe ), in " Manosque ".
The director being Marcel Pagnol.
There are a whole series of films from him. Written and directed. All you have seen are good remakes.
But trust me the original are so much real, not so polished. I know I was born there.
can be as beautiful as Beart.
It the first films it was Jacqueline Pagnol ( director´s wife ) who did the job.
God, what a doll.
