Man,
Talk about your standard issue moving films. I picked up this move because it featured Bjork. I thnk that although strange, she is a wonderful songstress, but she can act too?! And not like The Rock, or Lyle Lovett.... I mean ACT! Not to mention the musical quality that give a hazy backdrop of insanity....Though twisted, I think all should enjoy Dancer in the Dark. 5 stars by me.
Follow Ups:
I thought it was one of the most distasteful films, and grossy overrated.
That's the only movie I've seen in the theater where, at the end of the movie, everyone sat still until the credits were over and many people, including myself, walked out crying.I thought it was a powerful film. I have some reservations about von Trier. Did you see 'Dogville'? His motives for making films are, to me, highly suspicious. But his work is effective, and he's an excellent director.

Stranger than that, we're alive!Whatever you think it's more than that, more than that.
Ummm ... I really like Lars Von Trier's films.Breaking the Waves is one of my favorite films (and it's got really interesting "intermission" sequences with 70s music if you're a music lover). It's also very twisted, but Von Trier has this way of pushing situations past the point of sanity and, instead of coming across as artsy-fartsy or pretentious, churns out a powerful emotional payoff. I can't belive that I get teary eyed watching his over-the-top situations -- Von Trier somehow manages to make the audience put aside any sense of beliveability and just *feel* for the characters. To me, filmmaking is at its finest when a director can take two wet sticks of wood and rub them to make fire.

How true! I agree with you, and I am going to look into a few more films by him.
I liked this film, but not as much as you. I thought it was more style than substance, but I liked the style enough that I would also recommend it. I do think that many people will like the film even though they may not be fans of Bjork (which I am not).
