Anyone get the 5-DVD boxed set from Criterion yet? The one-hour "Farewell to Cinema" interview with Bergman seems particularly intriguing.P.S. - Just viewed the Criterion "Grand Illusion". Superb, and a great treatment of a timeless classic - I believe I like this film better than "Rules of the Game". The commentary track is excellent also.

In his critic to society Renoir " Grande illusion " is more easy going than the " Rules..."
I feel the same as you.
So I'm looking forward to settling down with this in the bear future. Long overdue. As much as I love Grand Illusion, Rules of the Game is perhaps my favorite film of all time. Criterion had it announced for over a year and a half before they finally released it this year. Worth the wait, however. Both Renoir films are essential viewing, IMO, along with L'Atalante. What a great decade (the 30's) for French movies...and all movies, really. But those three are probably in my all-time top 20.
I suspect Patrick might want to add some, but I agree, the two Renoires plus L'Atalante make a very solid foundation.I really don't know which Renoire I would keep if I only could have one.
Are artistic sensibilities determined by genetics?
I agree absolutely on Renoirs films, The last time I viewed "Rules" I was rather distracted, probably the reason I enjoyed "Grand Illusion" more. I would also add that I thoroughly enjoyed "La Bete Humane", although it's not at the stupendous level of the other three.I would love to find time to sit down with the five-hour version of "F&A". Maybe a sick day is called for. Bergman and Renoir have been in rotation in my DVD player lately (Next up "The Seventh Seal"), but I'm thinking of a change. Fellini, maybe? Hitch? Decisions, Desicions.

Yes, the criterion DVD is an improvement over thewir laserdisc. It is the granddaddy of all wartime prison movies and features episodes repeated endlessly by its followers. I like the way the language constantly changes between nationalities and also Strohein's magnificent performance. We almost lost this one and it would have been a tragedy of "Greed"-like proportions if we had.
