...because it was assigned as homework in my daughter's freshman Catholic High School World History class. Although I am a Kerry supporter and intensely dislike Bush and the things he's done, I was surprised that this film was assigned, at least without something showing the other side's views. I asked my daughter what she was supposed to get out of it and her response was that it was an example of a political viewpoint. We spent a lot of time during the movie discussing "propaganda" and how facts can be used and sometimes distorted to show a particular viewpoint. While I saw nothing new in the film, it certainly does paint W. as a puppet/moron.
Follow Ups:
want my kids being assigned it as homework. That is over the line.
There are many reasons why this film can be taught in school - but you need to knwo what the teahcer has in mind - a topic around pop politics pop history versus textual analysis. What are the pros and cons of history and politics from film and televisions versus academic texts.Just giving this to watch and write something on to me is irrisponsible teaching - but if there is a bbigger point - it can be great. Lots of issues around propaganda here as well. And though I happen to agree with Moore in principle and it boggles my mind that Bush will likely get re-elected people are entitled to their opinion - no matter how stupid THEIR opinion is. :-)
a filter. They can read history of 911, the history of the Saudis and Bush, whatever. But Moore's film is both a documentary and propaganda. All documentary films are, some to a greater degree. I don't want their teacher deciding what poltical views my kids should have. That's my job (not).I can let them watch F911 at home. Anyway, I am saying the same thing here twice, so...
.
It's so nice you talked through the movie. What an unbiased view of the film! Did you do the same for the audio components you reviewed?
Well he is a puppet - didn't you see all that wiring on his back during the debate - There's only so many facial expressions and phrases "Axis of evil" "weapons of Mass destruction" "Saddam is a dictator"The teacher should have another side to combat Moore. Does not need to be another film but some other piece from the right. Moore's film is not a documentary iot is more of a mocumentary with facts. Facts are often interpretive.
.
It is, you know. That's what freedom does, it marches. Great metaphor, especially as something to marshal against facts."This war has cost us 120 billion dollars, the lives of 1140 American soldiers, and credibility in the world community."
"FREEDOM IS ON THE MARCH!"
"Did you hear that, darling? The president is talking about freedom marching again."
"He's got my vote!"

... nick-named the Coultergeist (apologies to Tobe Hooper & Steven Spielberg).
I don't think he really gets what is going on - He hears the voice of God telling him what to do. Sorry but Western ideals cannot nor should the be rammed down the throats of other nations - many don't want it.The west is a Cold civilization in which to live compared to many other countries where they are deemed "Less Free." This is just easy to sell to the voters.
Frankly in one way I'd like to see Bush get in - my Canadian Dollar is better against the US dollar than it has been in over 10 years - because despite the Bush rhetoric your economy is taking a dump. Maybe if you guys can get into one quadrillion dollars in deficit the Republicans won;t always say the democrats are responsible for the bad economy - it was in a downturn when Clinton left yadda yadda and it's cyclical yadda yadda - funny ghow the cycle works.
Let Bush figure out the mess he made - kind of unfair to dump it on Kerry.
Some of us got fed up with posting Outside because of the party-line bickering. I would request that we allow the film forum to remain just that.
In Vino Veritas
I'm in that club and I agree with you...just hard to resist sometimes!
