This is a mid fifties George Pal production about an international
group of space explorers (all men) who, having built an impressive rocket outside of a wheel-like space station (a dougnut like the one in "2001"), take off for Mars. Along the way human frailty intervenes, with tragic results. The film appeared on the dreaded VHS tape but never on laserdisc or DVD until it was released on a great DVD yesterday. Not as good as I remember from the one time I saw it as an impressionable teen ager, but still worth a look see.
The specail effects are impressive and the trip was inspired by a book by Willy Lay and Chesley Bonestell (whose work also appears in the film). Anamorphic widescreen, color, mono sound. No extras.
