Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo, Morgan Freeman, Donald Sutherland, Kevin Spacey, and Cuba Gooding star in this thriller of divorced scientists (Hoffman and Russo) investigatng a viral outbreak in a small remote California town who come to suspect that the virus is a government project gone awry. Kevin Spacey is a colleague who becomes infected. Sutherland is a bad general and Freeman is a good general. Gooding is an enlisted helicopter pilot who befriends Hoffman,I have always had trouble accepting Hoffman in the action role he plays here. All performances are workmanlike but the movie overall is nowhere near as good as "The Andromeda Strain"
Follow Ups:
. it was the first laser disk in my area out on AC-3 (nka Dolby Digital 5.1)! God, that brings back memories, sitting in the store listing with awe to separate channels of surround.
Yes, because of the larger real estate on a laserdisc, the Dolby Digital 5.1 sound is better than its DVD counterpart. The problem is that most pre-amp/processors lack the requred RF demodulator to properly decode the LD's DD track. So I make do with DTS Neo Six, which simulates 6.1 channels from stereo.
This film was part of what I like to call "Disasters, Part II." Part one was Airplane, Earthquake, Poseidon Adventure, et al. Part two is Outbreak, Volcano, et al. At the least the former had some campy schlock value. Outbreak was probably not the worst, but certainly not the best.
