Early sixty. When I saw this film back then I did not like it. ( in fact four sketches )
When shortly I saw it on DVD, It remind me who did them...Visconti...De Sica...Monicelli...Fellini...So I had to see them again!
The truth is that it did not change my view, not for an iota.
Fellini´s film was a statement against the sexual oppresion of the Italy back then. It lack the Maestro spirit and is plainly boring, just the here and there of the master´s hand.
Sica is a little better but still not brillant, Sophia Loren playing ( being ) the prize for a tombola, typically Italian, but no deeph.
Visconti´s is the best, having Romy Schneider at his side you feel that they teamed up very well, the subject is tragic, in one word are our spouses all our personal prostitutes? The answer is yes in a way.
In the last part, who has been cut because it did make the film too long at the Cannes Festival of 1962, Monicells work is now restaured on this DVD.
I start to look at a part of it and...stopped. I will make another effort tonight and if worth I may comment.....
Follow Ups:
Well I was dead wrong! Monicelli " les Mariés du Dimanche " ( Renzo e Luciana ) was...The best of the four!
Lovingly with tristesse and a light touch of humour. This is a must see.
I feel like going mainstream.
There was a very well made documentary ( remember I hate this films upon films ) but this one was really well made and very helpful. I learnt about the Italian manie with films with sketches in the 60-70´s and wonderful stories about Boccace.
For this, it is worth.
You will get our friend Scott all tied in nots over this one!I think I saw it, many years ago, but no real memories of it.
Among the directors, I would have to plead "Scott" by saying that AFAIK I am completely unfamiliar with work by Monicelli - as I looked at his filmography, I thought I recognized some titles, but that was about it. Maybe I saw some of them years ago, but just don't recall.
Any of this works you could recommend? Before I have chance to read his bio tonight...
Well he is mostly knows for his " Toto´s ". ( I do not like them, very Italian... ) The only one I can recommend is " La Grande Guerre " I have a good memory of it, even if it was LONG time ago.
Gassman*...Sordi....Wonderful.
Will check out my rental place later.
With very few of us being left...
Long live to the risk free Hollywood and company.
