In this wonderful French film from 2001, Nathalie Baye has placed an ad in a sex magaazine and Sergi Lopez answers it over the Internet. They set up a meeting in a cafe and then retire to a nearby hotel to axct out their mutual fantasy. One of the charms of the film is that we never find out what that fantasy is. The story is told in a series of interview flashbacks to an off screen interviewer and it becomes clear very quickly that her memories differ from his and vice versa. We know from the outset that the affair did not last, but we are intrigued to follow their weekly trysts and the ups and downs of their gradually growing love for each other. Beautifully shot in widescreen (the DVD is ananorphic) and in Dolby Digital 5.1 sound with very readable English subtitles.Actress Baye, long a fixture in French films, played Leo Decaprio's mother in Speilberg's "Catch Me if You Can"
Follow Ups:
I second the recommendation of this film. While there are many things about the French I do not like, their adult treatment of sex is better than typical American fare. I appreciate seeing a movie about sex that treats it in something of an adult nature without degenerating into locker room humor.

Yep.
I would tend to agree on treatment of sex, but not the movie. There is definitely a maturity in the way some European directors do that, as opposed to mostly the adolescent treatment that is so common in the US, where it is turned into a cheap attention getter. One of the best such treatment in my recent memory would be the superlative Claire Denise' Friday Night (Vendredi soir).
Another good example could be found in the Vozvrascheniye (The Return).
See my old review of it:
Yes, your insight calling it kaka was brilliant and very original. I see right below it in the search I did that you don't think "Citizen Kane" is all that great, either. Well, I have seen "...Affair..." twice and think it is very good. I could care less where the money to finance it came from. (BTW Ebert gave it 3 1/2 stars).
Looks like you simply can't take other not liking what you like. Perhaps you should grow up?
that I see that you didn't like it. I made no comment further than that. You must agree, however, as long as YOU brought it up that many feel that Kane is the greatest movie ever made. I have NO problem with anyone disagreeing with my or the majority opinion as I myself like or dislike films that many others dislike or like. Isn't that the purpose of this forum?
Well, let's not belabor this, so I will just make a couple of closing comments. First you indeed commented negatively on my opinion, and second, my dislike or affection for Kane has no connection to this discussion. We should not expect everyone agree with out opinions. Ridiculing a film is completely fine, ridiculing a person expressing his opinion is not.
Well ô well it should.
BTW I love the uncertain nostalgy that is upon this film, particulary the begining and the end.
