When I first heard about this movie, I was initially turned off by the title. But, as time went by, there was a growing buzz amoung the Asian movie circles that this was comperable to Hero and Croutching Tiger. Curiosity got the better of me, and I ordered the R3 disc.
This is a nice movie. Its not quite in the Hero league, but its very good nonetheless. The costumes, scenery and cinimatography is fantastic. The game of "echoes" in the beginning is mind blowing. The Plot is good as is the acting.
Basically a Captian in the Imperial Army follows a blinf Courtisan hoping she will lead him to a band of rebels called the House Of Flying Daggers. Along the way, there are assaults, and aince they are amoun the wilderness and woods, their hormones kick in, as wellas a few suprises along the way. The scenery is georgous, and the fight is handled very well. All in all, a very enjoyable movie.
The print used for this disc was a little washed out, but that doesn't really take away from the movie. There is word it will be distributed in the US in a few months. That would be a good thing.

Follow Ups:
The ending is horrible. I watched it while on a business trip to Korea, in the theatre people were laughing out loud. I think the movie started out fine, but at the end it was completely screwed up, I am surprised that Zhang YiMou did such a poor job.
I didn't really care for the ending either, though my wife did. Still, I think overall it was a good movie-for the cinimatography if nothing else.

I've got the R3 too.
I think the overly bright, washed out look was deliberate as some scenes look more "normal".Visually a real treat, ditto the fullrate DTS soundtrack.
Yes that opening set piece with the drums and plate of beans in the brothel is demo material. The HK DVD marketing model (timely release on DVD at a reasonable price)is a revelation compared to what US based companies do and is a better way to combat piracy than present policies.
The film gets a January 2005 release down here.
Amazing considering Hero has just been released cinematically.

I think you're right-don't know what I was thinking.
