IMO, not even close to Shintaro Katsu, but the story line was appropriate and true to the original concept. Here, there's more killing per minute than in any typical segment of the original series. I enjoyed the familiar and appreciated the differences, but I wonder if there's insufficient story background for first time Zatoichi viewers? The “cutting” scenes were a bit distracting to me. Particularly the post-production additions of cut skin and blood squirts. Otherwise and overall, I thought the movie was pretty good for the genre and creative with contemporary variations.
A few music sequences were very entertaining, which were presented in a “stomp” like way. Farmers in the field with hoes and builders with construction tools. The celebration “tap” was unique. There's one hilarious “Beat” moment you have to see...
Follow Ups:
I rather enjoyed Beat Takeshi's bizarre sense of humor in this. Sort of a mock tribute to the original in a way, but also very good.
I agree, Beat Takeshi brought an interesting twist to the mannerisms of the blind swordsman. Was it Beat's preference for the edgy and brutal apparent in the fight scenes? For me, the original's sense of a reluctance to get involved was the missing subtlety.
Tim,Saw it in the recently redone Regent Theater in Toronto (old stomping grounds) with its new DLP projector and SOTA sound system.
I bought the DVD already and it is most certainly worth getting.
Kurosawa would have liked it.

A while back you posted an exuberant “Wow” regarding this movie. I made a pre-release purchase and waited for the DVD, which arrived yesterday. I agree, certainly worth getting. The theater experience must have been great, as the eyes and ears are rewarded with this film and sound track.I didn't notice at the time of my on-line purchase, but it came as a double feature set - paired with “Sonatine”. Is this typical? Worked out well for me.
