Ostensibly a time-warp sci-fi flick about a ham-radio-operating father and son (and the title *should* be Wavelength), the former of whom died thirty years ago, it evolves into more, much more. In fact the exact genre is difficult to ascertain -- I'm calling it a genre-fuck movie! And after it starts rolling, the sense of impending peril keeps growing, and I may say that peril does not fail to arrive. And towards the end there's a gunshot that packs a wallop like no other single shot I've ever witnessed. The acting (Dennis Quaid(!) and Jim Caviezel) and writing are terrific. On the downside are the FX that illustrate the time warp, and the lighting. Always, the lighting. I say, Shoot all lighting directors!
Go, while it lasts in the theatres.
Director of Photography lights set (not to be confused with cameraman...who is operator) Michael Mann, among a few others, directs, lights and even shoots (camera operator) his films. The director typically works just with the actors. Some directors praised for their "camera work" or "framing," "blocking" or even "camera movement" in scenes/shots have no such input-- by choice, by dint of ignorance of such things, or general laziness. (Ask anyone who ever worked on a Woody Allen "show". He hires great DPs and they make all the critical visual choices in his films.Due to the conservatory approach to teaching film elsewhere in the world, most of the European directors have learned lighting, lenses, camera operation, etc. during their training...
I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.Dennis Quade is one of the most underrated actors in the past 25 years. The guy always produces. I was blown away by the film since I went in with little expectation.
