Takeshi Kitano directs and stars in this new, updated version of the adventures of the "legendary" blind swordsman Zatoichi. This version is wrought with sword play at blinding speed, gushing pints of blood, and punctuated with comic relief. Sort of eastern-spaghetti action with chuckles. Found it most entertaining and was totally delighted by the ending which was a suprise River Dance-like clog number that included most every member of the cast set to a modern soundtrack.Obviously no monocle or Dom required--but it was fun.
Follow Ups:
I caught this recently on DVD. Really enjoyed it.Wasn't too into the "Stomp" dancing sequences, and Zatoichi's battles against lesser opponents weren't too riveting, although the director/lead actor did make them look good (like the rain against a blue sky).
The sword battles are very quick (one well-placed blow wins the fight) rather than a bunch of clanging swords. I mostly liked how the film showcases the strategy of Zatoichi and the gang's bodyguard in their two encounters - between them, the battle is already won or lost by how each one chooses to draw his sword. Very well thought out scenes. I watched the last fight a few times to catch every bit of strategy between the two fighters.
