...(make sure your mother-in-law is there too) nothing beats the "In the Realm of Senses".I am sure Steve will second this one.
Seriously, he is right, no way to recommend anything without knowing your tastes.
My most embarrassing film recommendation was intended for my nephew, who just graduated from Berkeley with a degree in Film Studies and now works at the American Film Institute. During his junior year, he was doing a paper on the Japanese gangster films of "Beat" Takeshi Kitano. I thought he should also check the '50's-to-'60's works of Seijin Suzuki and sent my mother a copy of "Branded To Kill" to forward to him. Well, my message got garbled and my mother thought the film was for her senior citizen club to watch. This film is a crazy mixture of hitman rivalry with a cooked rice fetish and kinky sex that got Suzuki fired as a director for Nikkatsu Studios. Needless to say, my mother has never introduced me to her senior citizen club friends, who are probably happy to put that film and the pervert who recommended it behind them as they watch "Runaway Bride"!
Hey, was that the one with the #2 hit man who misses a hit and kills a bystander so the #1 hit man comes after him, and even comes to the guy's apt. and handcuffs himself to #2 for a while, just to psych him out before he tries to kill him? Seems I remember #2 had a thing for the smell of cooking rice. That was one bizarre flick. Actually, I kind of liked it, though mostly for the wierd psychological bent (don't really care much for gangster or yakuza flicks in general)
...the guy with the cooked rice fetish was #3, played by Joe "the Chipmonk" Shishido. He had his cheeks surgically-enhanced (to improve his looks?). Frankly, I think he should get those breast implants removed from his face. I also think Mariah Carey should get her implants removed from her armpits.
...or is it still held by one of those seniors? When we say "senior citizen" we usually mean a knitting Grandma, forgetting for a moment that some of them had conducted, shall we say, rather eventful lives.
Where did all those former sex maniacs, drug addicts, gangsters, hookers, etc, etc, go? I am sure some of them are now watching that dreadful "Runaway Bride" sitting side-by-side with a retired Bell Labs nerd engineer, who now uses his pocket protector for the second pair of glasses, and dream about them good ol' days.
.
What are your guests like? What format (VHS or DVD)? What genres are your favorites (comedy, romance, action, scifi, drama, etc.)?
