What's insidious about Rear Window is that, unlike Vertigo, we (the auidience) really identify with Jimmy. We don't think he's a creep, even though he's made a life for himself out of spying on his neighbors.
That's where Grace Kelly comes in so beautifully. Even the most magnificent eye-candy in the world can't distract Jimmy from his obsession with what he sees out the window. She's trying to get something going with him and he's barely responding.
Only later, if at all, does the audience realize that it has become totally immersed in Jimmy's guilty pleasure.
