Amores Perros is a mighty good film. One of those films that makes you think while watching, This is why I like movies.Y Tu Mama Tambien was another popular Mexican film that you should catch. It's really good and has the same star from Amores Perros. I think you would like that film as well, Victor.
From Brazil -- City of God is one of my favorite films of recent years. It's like Goodfellas, but in Brazil.

I thought it was OK, but not great.I don't think I can make my lady watch another Goodfellas even with subtitles! :-)
I will try, though. Most likely I will end up watching it alone... such is life in fast lane!
crime film since...Los Olvidados.
City of God is a great film. Very compelling. But it is not from Mexico, but rather Brazil. The language is not spanish, but rather Portuguese, which is close to Spanish, but not the same.
If I am not mistaken he was born in Brazil, or at least has his family there.I am willing to try it, but as I said, my lady is not much into crime movies, so it might be an uphill (downstairs, really...) battle.
Is it really violent?
It is violent. It is based on a true story of the crimes and gangs on the streets in an area that is called "City of God", which apparently is a place in Brazil where they "house" the lower classes. It sort of reminded me of the camps in Nazi Germany, with the exception that the people were free to leave at will. Buy they always returned. The film depicts the life of crime, which includes selling and marketing drugs, murder, and robbery. What I really appreciated was that the filmmaker was able to cover a lot of territory, while focusing on a few charachters which allows the viewer to become involved in the story.
The "protaganist", who wrote a magazine article upon which the movie was based, grew up in the "City of God", and was friends with many of the subjects. He developed a fascination with photography, and so was allowed access to the gangs because they so wanted their photographs to be taken. He then commuted between the City of God and the real city to work for a magazine.
It would certainly be on my top ten for that year. But it is violent, and there is coarse language (though it is subtitled).
