My New Year's movie. Did not do it for me. 40 years is a long time and the what was new and anti war, and all, just did not do it for me today. Corny, a bit slapstickish, though terrific acting and photog...it will not be the first time that a movies is made by the times in which it's viewed. And then, some movies know no time. Tonighy?-- Tampopo. Japanese food film, from years ago. To be watched before dinner.
Follow Ups:
I saw King of Hearts back in the early 1980s and loved it. In the mid 90s, I suggested to my then-girlfriend (now-wife) that we watch it. Have to admit that I didn't like it as much then, much for the same reasons you listed. My wife loved it, though...although she doesn't watch many foreign films, so perhaps the newness of the genre to her was appealing...
My favorite scene (of many favorites) is the French restaurant one.
My fave is the old man instructing the young man to "enjoy the Gestalt of the noodles" before actually eating them.
