This 1950's George Pal production is based on a thirties novel (actually there were several) and features a star which colides with the earth after its sole planet causes severe damage and flooding 19 days before. Many countries try to build a rocket to fly small groups of survivors to the new planet and much of the story consists of building the U.S. rocket and deciding just who will be on it. Very impressive special effects for its day. Was Barbara Rush in EVERY sci fi movie in the fifties?
Follow Ups:
Barbara was in only two during the 1950s: When Worlds Collide and
It Came From Outer Space.
Faith Domergue played in three: This Island Earth, It Came From
Beneath the Sea and Timeslip(The Atomic Man).
Margaret Sheridan featured in The Thing From Another World.
Joan Taylor in Earth vs the Flying Saucers and 20 Million Miles to
Earth.
Margaret Field (Sally's mom) in Man From Planet X.
Ann Robinson in War of the Worlds.
Dana Wynter in Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
Patrica Neal in Day the Earth Stood Still and (TV Movie)Stranger
From Venus.
That should just about cover most of the top women in 50s scifi.

I've enjoyed this movie ever since I first saw it as a kid in the late 60s. I've read the book by Edwin Balmer and Philip Wylie and its sequel "After Worlds Collide", which takes place on the new planet, many times over the years. The movie was great but the novels are the true sleepers and the sequel is actually better the the first one.I seem to have recalled reading somewhere that a remake of the movie is in the works. That's a shame. Some things should not ever be "remade". "The Poseidon Adventure" is another being remade that will never live up to the original.

Oh great....can't stand Tom Cruise so looks like I'll wait for this one to hit HBO or TMC! I'll be damned if I ever drop coin on an TC flick.
I (and others here) thought he was pretty good in this one.
