Sydney Pollack directed this film about the consequences of a Miami area newspaper publishing semi-confirmed negative information about a local businessman with mob relatives. Sally Fields plays an investigative reporter and Paul Newman is the businesman. Bob Balaban plays the lead investigator and Willard Brimley comes in at the end as a Justice Dpeartment honcho. The film is very entertaining (I've seen it several times) and provides food for thought regarding the role of the media and its responsibilities, or lack thereof, regarding the public's need to know and the privacy of citizenry.

Exactly right on both counts. BTW, the Verdict is a nice book too and worth a read.
Yes I had the laserdisc and now the DVD. Do you rmember when the LD was released they left out a scene and had to recall it?
-----> Do you remember when the LD was released they left out a scene and had to recall it? <-----Wow, I wasn't aware of that... I've got the LD and don't remember it missing anything. I caught The Verdict on cable a couple weeks ago and didn't see anything new, but I wasn't paying very close attention.... maybe I got one of the corrected discs.
I do remember taking part in the letter campaign to get Wild at Heart released in widescreen and was able to mail in my pan and scan copy for a letterboxed version... we laser diehards fought the good fight in those pre-dvd days!
Best wishes for quick A-B side changes and may all your discs be CAV...
