I haven't seen it but here in LA we are getting bombarded with hype: "Sideways make history!!!!", "History making film!!!!", "Best reviewed movie of the year!!!!", "Top on everyone's best ten list!!!"Geez, I thought it was about 2 middle aged guys drinking wine. Is it really that good?
Music is Emotion
Follow Ups:
I enjoyed this film...but I think Before Sunset beats this, the characters were much more real, much more depth.
the only one I've seen twice in the theater- and I enjoyed it just as thoroughly the second time. I typically see about 50 movies over the course of a year, about one per week and there have certainly been others I've enjoyed. But this one really absorbed me. Nothing so complex, just strong dialogue and strong performances combining humor with character studies of 2 very flawed guys. And both guys just shine in their roles. Roger Ebert compared it to Five Easy Pieces and I think that is a very apt comparison.
...this seemed to be the year of the quirky but well done movie targeted at a specific age group.
"Sideways" for adults.
"Garden State" for college kids.
"Napoleon Dynamite" for high schoolers. The problem is that the older you are, the more difficult it is to appreciate the movie for that age group, i.e. not many adults "got" "Napoleon Dynamite" but every teenager I've talked to loves it and has seen it multiple times. Of the 3 here, only "Sideways" would make my Top 10 List.
will go down as my second to last movie, that I may ever go to..unless I'm on vacation and it's raining....will have to wait 6 months to a year to see Hotel Rwanda and the like...greatness has longevity....
I am waiting to see "Million Dollar Baby" and "Rwanda" before making my final judgement. But it is the best film I have seen so far.
It wasn't a bad movie, but imho its way over rated. I won't bother to post my criticims on Sideways again, but if you are interested, you can prolly dig them up using "search." Also, I would hardly suggest that anyone refrain from seeing Sideways (again its not a terrible movie,) but there are others from 2004 that I would recommend seeing first.I wonder if critics are finding Sideways so appealing because there were so many weak movies during 2004?
It's more about two guys who can't get their shit together at middle age. I always have to disqualify myself from picking a "best film of the year" beause I don't see everything. I did see Sideways, and I thought it was great. It's like a film from the 1970s, like a Hal Ashby film or King of Marvin Gardens. Strong characters who are opposites with a well-drawn relationship between them, each having flaws you'll see in your middle age friends, strong actors, film moves along quickly, a good mix of dramatic conflict and comedic moments.

Today, with all the hard competition in the music business, it's almost impossible to come up with anything totally original. So we haven't. However, this disc was made with the accent on heavy music.
