It is not too often that you meet the film that really grabs you and leaves you in awe with its incredible mastery and poignancy.Il Posto, the 1961 Italian film by Ermanno Olmi is one such event. I simply can't fine enough words to convery its beauty and its uncommon touch of humanity.
This is simply one of the best films that I have seen in the last year... and that's got to tell you something.
I am not going to tell the story, as it is simple and seemingly insignificant, but its simple beauty is overwhelming.
The way the director treats the subject and leads his young actors through the labirinth of chamber-like scenes is mesmerizing and is bound to become on of those unforgettable events in your life.
It seems that it is destined to take the spot next to the likes of L'Atalante, Forbidden Games and Nights of Cabiria.
Wonderful... simply wonderful!
Available from Netflix, as is another work by that director - The Tree with the Wooden Clogs... ordered, of course!
Follow Ups:
I have not seen Il Posto, although it's on my 'list' as I recently discovered this director by renting and watching Il Fidanzati. I loved this movie and would express similar sentiments about it this very artistic and insightful piece of cinema. Given your feelings on Il Posto, I'd suggest you take a look at it. I believe this was also a Criterion edition and, as such, is very nicely rendered on DVD.

Nice to be able to discover such gems even after decades of this hobby!
Well with such a recommendation, what is left to me? Nothing! Ordered. Merci!!!
I put my money where my mouth is and just ordered the Criterion DVD!That doesn't happen often at all!
That is the kind of a movie you will enjoy... I can't stop thinking about it!
I will get the Criterion too, they just set the standard for DVD as they will no doubt for Blue Ray or X Ray.....
and I've been meaning to pick it up. Now I will. Thanks for the heads up...
I hope you don't throw "brilliant" around easily...
Warren do not worry! He-he...
Not for everyone, of course, but nothing is. It is most definitely not an action flick. But the ball scene alone is more than worth the price of admission!
The office characters are presented like incredibly sharp caricatures, with each one containing an interesting story. That late night writer alone, all and by himself would have made a movie in good hands.
The movie is so simple and yet so thick, you almost want to hit Pause after each scene to let it settle down better in your mind.
The one where the ball music starts to play and the guy is taking off his coat is so grabbing that my wife asked me to rewind to see it again, and I didn't mind at all.
Ai really and truly don't know why this director is not better known.
You will keep coming back to one episode after another, so well made each one is. The short scene in the cafeteris with the toothless woman is precious. So is the one with a lonely couple at the ball. So is.... so is... one after another...
No, I don't throw that word around much at all. I don't recall when I gave a movie such an enthusiastic endorsement.
It is just THAT good.
... that makes 201 movies on my netflix queue now. great. just great.

Today, with all the hard competition in the music business, it's almost impossible to come up with anything totally original. So we haven't. However, this disc was made with the accent on heavy music.
We are going at a steady three films a week rate. It seems that the turnaround time is six days - I mail it on Tuesday, I get new one on Monday, and there is nothing I can do to make it faster.Do you know how much more the 5 movies plan is?
That sucks. You must live far from a distribution center or something. I live in Brooklyn, and my DVDs get mailed to and from Maspeth in Queens, which I'm sure has a lot to do with my swift turnaround--probably around three days for me. I think I get deliveries the day before their estimation almost every time.If there's no getting around the weeklong wait, maybe the 5-DVD plan would be more worth your while, despite its being less the value the three-DVD plan is.
maybe Victor's mailman is getting himself a fine education in foreign films. Heh heh.

Yes, I am surprised as, as I said, I send them to MD. Next time I will double check the address and all the date stamps.Six days turnaround sounds like too much to me.
My turnaround time is two days. If I mail out monday, I get a new disc on wednesday. Occassonally there is a delay. I've done both the three and five disc plans.Netflix dropped its standard plan price, but not the other plans, so the three disc plan is a much better value than the five disc plan. The advantage of the five disc plan is that you'll always have some discs for the weekend. Under the three plan, if you watch a couple movies during the work week, you could be without any discs for the weekend.

I don't know how you manage such a quick turnaround... I will investigate, as I mail it to the address in MD - just across the border.I am envious!
Could be staff reduction or merely delaying mailouts by a day to save on postage (float). I used to get return and send emails the same day, now there is a one to two day lag.
must leave time to read....
