I saw Spartan, like all Mamet screenplays it had its attractions. But best of the year? Not for me, not by a long shot.
Follow Ups:
I agree. I enjoyed it as well but it is not the best of the year. And "Homicide" remains my favorite Mamet film.
for me is the delightful Things Change. But I've seen all his films and like them all to one degree or another. Nobody talks like the dialogue that the Mamet characters spout- there is a wit and poetry to it. Same in Spartan, but in the service of a pretty unremarkable plot.
Frankly, not a very good film as films go [without going into depths of why it's not a good film]. I'd be pretty sceptical to follow the critic who put this at the top of his list of last year's best movies.
