Hi.I've always liked The Right Stuff a lot. Seen it a many times on VHS.
Recently I bought it on DVD zone 2. And what do I see. They have cut away a very beautiful scene where John Glenn is orbiting the earth, and some aborigines i Australia make sparks from their fire surround the capsule. Why the f%&%/ are they doing this. It's like taking a painting and cut of a few inches to make it fit on the wall.
I really don't hope this is a DVD trend.
Theo.
I just watched The Right Stuff DVD a few days ago. My version had the Glenn Orbital scene and the aboriginal fire scene. I was not aware that there were two DVD versions of the movie. Anyway I don't doubt that your scenes are cut out, and I think it is a real bummer. Maybe they were trying to make it shorter to appeal to a wider range of people.....
Hi Theo,It sure wouldn't be the first time a film has been re-edited on re-release, either to lop something out or to add something in.
Curiously, however, it actually makes me more interested in owning the DVD of the film as I loved this movie on its initial release, and have seen it many times, but every time I've seen it either in cinemas or on video with friends everyone winces when that scene comes on.
To Australians the entire sequence concerning Gordon Cooper in the outback is so highly contrived and corny as to be offensive.
The scene-setter of him singing "Waltzing Matilda" with the driver on the way to the tracking station is appalling. Imagine how stupid it would have been to set the scene at Pancho's Happy Bottom by having the whole bar of test pilots singing a rousing chorus of "Off we go into the wild blue yonder". Same thing. The aboriginal scene with the camp-fire & ritual is equally corny, plus there is nothing mentioned about our real contribution to the Mercury program.
It's a pity, as the sequences of Glenn in orbit are excellent, and true to history.
Still, all that didn't stop me buying the video :^)
Cheers
TG
***Why the f%&%/ are they doing this. It's like taking a painting and cut of a few inches to make it fit on the wall.So you don't think this has ever been done? Take a look at Rembrandt's Night Patrol - it was too big, so they lopped about 3 feet of it. And what a beautiful picture - the Patrol. And the world has survived...
Agree with you, however.
