Anyone see either of these movies? If you saw both, which one would you recommend? Two of my friends have seen Closer and both thought it was very good. And I don't know anyone who has seen Kinsey. (Maybe that should tell me something :-)I prefer Liam to Julia R and Jude L, but I really don't know enough about either flick to have an opinion. Any comments from those who have seen either movie would be appreciated.
Follow Ups:
go for the gusto. spring for the $$. see both. I loved Closer. Powerful, provocative stuff, with great acting, writing, and directing. I will rent this in a jif when it comes out on DVD. Will work great on DVD. It will probably be better on the second go 'round--mark of a great movie. Maybe not. I shall see on down the DVD road. peace, warren
Haven't seen Kinsey (or heard of it even), but saw Closer just today. Very bizarre movie...a little hard to follow. Even if you're a Julia Roberts fan or a Jude Law follower, it's hard to recommend this flick to anyone. I'd save my $$$ if I were you and check out anything else. Wish I would have looked here before I went.....
Closer is the first Mike Nichols movie I've seen where I almost wanted my money back after the show. (It's based on a successful play, and it seemd very forced and artificial to me.)Whereas, I would pay money to see Kinsey again. It's not quite as good as Condon's previous high profile film, Gods & Monsters, but it is very good, with excellent performances from Liam Neeson, Laura Linney and Peter Saarsgard.
The film is flattering to Kinsey but hardly "glorifies" him. He was flawed in many ways, as were certain aspects of his research - this is shown in the movie. Perhaps saying this film is "intelligent" may not encourage you or others to see it, but that's how "Kinsey" struck me.
There is also a certain perverse pleasure in seeing Tim Curry play an uptight, prudish professor.
My final verdict - not as good as The Aviator (which despite what you read is very good indeed, see it if you haven't already) but an interesting flick which is entertaining and well crafted.
You can give Closer a miss, and catch it later on DVD if you're afraid you've missed something.
it is a biopic and like most biopics tends to glorify its subject...and of course I don't know how much is true and how much is fictionalized. But on its own terms, it is a very interesting story about a dedicated scientist who decides human sexuality is an important area to explore using science, and the wild consequences on his personal life and society. It is well made, none of the acting can be faulted. In many ways, I enjoy straight documentary more than fictionalized biopics, but it is certainly a fascinating character study. Have not seen Closer, it got very mixed reviews, would be low on my own list.
I've only seen "Closer," but plan to rent Kinsey on DVD.Neither my wife or I liked Closer. I don't know what is entertaining about this movie. I do like the Natalie Portman character, but Jude is becoming like Nicholas Cage--over exposure (appearing in too many movies).
I like Clive Owen, but he is rather wooden. Julia is interesting in a non-comedy role. But over all, I didn't like this movie. Four dysfunctional people being dysfunctional to one another. YMMV.
Of course, if your friends liked it, and you are like them, then go for it.
