This Depression era Frank Capra film is a cinderella story of a band of street low lifes gathering to bail out one of their fellows. It seems that Apple Annie, an poor alcoholic old lady, has been writing to her daughter in Europe and pretending to be in "high society". When the daughter writes and announces she is marrying the son of a Spanish count the street people prevail upon the local mob boss to do a makeover on Annie and pass her off as a real society babe to the daughter, her intended, and most importantly the count himself.
Typical fluff from Capra, not one of his best.
Follow Ups:
rico,It's rare that I disagree with you, but I have to say that I find the 1933 "Lady for a Day" a real treat all the way through. It's such a wonderfully, fast and light fantasy from that era much like "It's a Wonderful Life", "It Happened One Night", "Our Man Godfrey", "Ninotchka", and "Destry Rides Again". I always find it enjoyable. The casting is just perfect and there's that great rapid fire dialogue.
"Fluff"- yes, but the best, most satisfying kind of fluff and "typical" of the best.
Cheers,
...and that judge Manville, with his flowery prose, was really special, worth the admission ticket indeed!Regards

Capra lost as they say, his touch, all was wrong in this remake.
And yes Bamby B, this film may have more layersof understanding of the human nature than other Capa films.
One of my favourit.

Thank you for these comments. I will bear them in mind next time Imwatch this. best, rico
There is also, so did I feel a great tenderness beyond the point of logic, where your head tell you it is not worth, and then you feel relieved, but somewhere you knowns it was just an excuse...against yourself.
Capra is one of the greatest.
Capa by the way too.
