The PBS movie of 20 years ago has been revived. I just saw a tape of a recent broadcast and holds it up pretty well. Adapted closely from a sci-fi novel by Ursula La Guinn. What would happen if your dreams could create a new reality, erasing the past? Would things automatically be better? Would you be afraid to dream?
Excellent video. Too bad public tv hasn't done more things like this.
My taped copy has a red streak running through it. PBS must have processed it like this so that people would want to buy their taped version. My local affilliate was selling the tape for $80 with a station membership.
The movie "Dark City" reminded me of it, but had conscious tuning instead of the dream. The Beatles song and the turtle were nice touches.I also enjoyed "Rappacini's Daughter" made during the same PBS sci-fi film period, but not as much as "Lathe Of Heaven."
Any more of these? My local PBS affiliate is not showing these sci-fi films.
You are right about similarities of these two very good flicks. I wish I could remember the quote in "Lathe" about the "sons of heaven". Both George Orr and the hero in "Dark" are basically good guys. Remember when Sewell was worried about the goldfish out of water? Decent, well-meaning, and in the case of Orr somewhat laid back and seemingly ineffectual. One of them, has memory problems, the other doesn't know the answers and is willing to admit it, and seeks help. Humility in a hero, is that a common occurence?Reminds me of the Hobbits, those humble, comfort loving little creatures who ultimately save the world in Tolkien's books.
