Early in the voice over narration on this prisoner of war movie the narrator observes that there are no prisoner of war movies. I guess he'd never heard of "Grand Illusion". "Stalag 17" stars William Holden and Peter Graves, with Otto Preminger as the German prison compound warden. The plot centers around plans to escape which are being sidetracked by a planted informer. Some mid century humor just doesn't go over today (liike that in "Forbidden Planet') but the reat of the story is taut and well done. Holden appeared years later of course in "The Bridge on the River Kwai", another prisoner of war yarn.
Follow Ups:
namely "Sunset Boulevard" and "Sabrina".All things considered, "Stalag 17" is several notches below "Boulevard", but still fun to watch. I agree about the dated humor.
Obvious observation--the '70s TV show "Hogan's Heroes" draws much of its material from "Stalag 17", although the general tone of the film (and the outcome) is much darker and sinister.
I always knew that Hogan's Heroes was based upon Stalag 17. I have always wondered what, if any, reaction the actors and makers from the movie had about Hogan's.
Without doubt an interesting film, more for his moral value than for it actual being as a film.
It should be in every video collection.
Patrick,I can't explain it fully, but the first time I watched "Stalag 17" it became my favorite film of all time. I've seen it at least 50 times.

"I think this place is restricted Wang, so don't tell them you're Jewish"
I know I remember you told so before. I will have another look one of this day.Maybe I was disturbed as the fact that it had not the " Lubitsch " touch has Wilder ever had.
And in both films he plays the reluctant good guy, forced into it. If I recall, Stalag 17 was based upon a true story. I have always wondered how much if it was true. Certainly, the prisoners planning an escape. But how elaborate? How much contraband was there? Were there really prisoners content with being prisoners of war? Good film.
