I decided to try that service about a month ago. So today I can run an early tally. They have pretty good selection, I have no complaint in that department. So far all films we received were worth viewing, with some outright gems. Tanken from that perspective it is a wonderful service.
Really, my only complaint is the cycle time. It is 7 days when you (I) are lucky, but more likely 8 days.
So I sent them a nastygram, asking if that was their way of controlling their cost - not cycling the films right away.
They of course denied having any such activity.
Bottom line is I can expect at most 12 films a month, more likely closer to 10. The price is still good, but not a bargain I was expecting.
Of course... as they said, your experience may differ, depending upon how close to one of their centers you are.
Follow Ups:
Works well for us.
the mail cycle time here is one day each way. As you stated, the proximity to their mail cneters is key. Even at 10 a month, though you are paying less than $2 ea., with no car expense or late fees. That still beats anything I can do locally.
For $21 a month, we can rent up to 2 movies at a time, hold either or both of them as long or short as we want, with no return deadline or late fees.Let's see... 2 movies x 2 hours each, minus 30 minutes more for travel and exchange = we could watch at the most 10 movies per day x 30 days.....
Actually we rent 2-4 movies a week, so the main advantage is we can pick them up early in the week to beat the rush, then watch them over the weekend. And none of that "get them back before noon crap" anymore.
I have been with Netflix a couple years now, first with the 3-at a time plan, then last year switched to the 2-at a time plan, since I live in the NYC I must be close to a shipping center, for I have had turnarounds in as little as 3days and at most 7days. I have not noticed a dip in their response time, even as they have changed the various plans. Since I was an early adopter, they allow me to retain the unlimited rentals for the same price as limited-to-4 dvds a month, On an average I can do 8-10 movies a month.
I am considering trying the Blockbuster service, since at the same price as NEtflix 2-at a time they offer 3-at a time unlimited.
Not too long ago, Netflix opened a distribution center in Carol Stream, IL....which is about 2 towns away from where I live. Can't beat that!! Wonder if they'd cut me a deal if I hand carried the returns & picked up the new ones?? :)
I live nearby also, the turnaround time is great! Just stay away from my queue and we won't have any problems!!!!
I dropped two DVDs in the mail on Tuesday and had two new ones waiting in my mailbox yesterday. No kidding. I think it all depends on where you live. What netflix should do to assure across-the-board satisfaction is adjust for people like you (who are either the victim of less efficient postal regions, not near enough to a netflix distribution center, or both) by making return and delivery express mail or something. If that's even possible. If it is, my guess is that you'd even be willing to pay a little more, say, to halve your turnaround time.
I am in the Washington, DC area and have no complaints with their service or turnaround time. I have been with them for years.
As I said, they claim it is the regional thingy... so apparently not much I can do.
I'll let you know how it turns out.One thing that might interest you: they provide two "free" rental coupons per month to use at a Blockbuster store. I assume to keep you happy while you're waiting for the next batch to be delivered. Plus, it is a couple of bucks less than Netflix.
since the price decrease. It's about a 6 day turnaround now and mine travel 400+ miles to/from the Georgia distribution point.I've seen about 123 films in about 13 months--majority foreign/independent. I was clipping along at about 12+ per month but now am seeing the 10 that you are seeing. That's about the bottom limit for perceived value for me.
