Well, finally got to Hero last night. Saw the trailer in theater eons ago on Kill Bill (one or two). Looked beautiful. Then after DVD release heard all the complaining about quality (which didn't phase me, as I can get over that). Then I watched it and the story is crap. In general the film felt like an excuse to use color and add some wire-fu. What a piece. At least crouching tiger had a little story that made me a little interested.Well, I'm off to view Calandar Girls with the little lady. Hope that proves to be more entertaining. BTW, also have La Strada from Netflix right now. Have never viewed it and am looking forward to it quite a bit.
Follow Ups:
..."Hero" didn't do much for me either. Just like "Open Water" - some critics praised it - I hated it.
I guess I was just looking for a little more originality. I have liked several other HK films in the past. Many were great fun. This one though just came off weak to me. Part of it may be the translation. The visual and colors reminded me of the "in the mind" scenes in The Cell. And the opening scene with the monk or preist or whatever running up the temple stairs was straight out of The Last Emporer.
Not sure about the "stick with Hollywood" remark. Seems as though there are plenty of foreign and independents for me to see that I don't have to go slumming just yet.
Unlike your reaction (of Duilawyer), I found Hero very interesting and compelling. I thought that the visuals were astounding and the use of color extremely involving as the story unfolded. The point about dying versus living for principles and how it guided Qin's decision as a ruler was fascinating (if, perhaps a bit overdone). Given the significance of Qin's rule and success at unifying China at that period, I thought this movie was very good at capturing this tension. The director pushed the stylistic approach to the kung-fu and grand epic genre in my view.
I suppose this is much like many of these postings under "film" -- it is all people's opinions and reactions. As for me, I'm getting Flying Daggers as soon as I can.
and I liked the way it was told from three different viewpoints and the wise old emperor didn't buy any of it.After all these are FANTASY films afterall. Was SpidermanII real? Yet no one here seems to be critical of suspending belief on that one!
Music is Emotion
HOFD isn't quite up to Hero standards, but its quite enjoyable nonetheless.

Flying Daggers, not up to Hero. Which ws not up to Crouching. Which made no sense, either. IF she coudl fly over the roofs why didn't she fly over the roofs to get him the medicine?
Just curious. Everyone seems to be critical of Here of House for being unrealistic! But Spiderman II is reality?
