Sorry, but I seemed to have forgotten what I liked about this film. Just saw it again this weekend. Very disturbing, and actually made me feel ill in many ways. No More!
Follow Ups:
I've always felt that Blue Velvet was an interesting and very entertaining movie, but I could never get behind it as a serious piece of art- one likely to stand the test of time. Eraserhead is the poney to bet on in that race, I think.I remember back when Blue Velvet came out, anything in film or art or theater that sent up dopey American middle class life and iconography from the fifties, was automatically praised for its penetrating, relavatory insight, hipness, and wit in a blind knee-jerk reaction.
Slap a ridiculous bit of fifties era cut-out ad art onto a collage, or shoot a video sending up Leave it to Beaver, and your an instant "artist", regardless of what you've actually made. It was a machine. And funny as the fifties are, I think the "product" that came out of this machine is not going to date well.Another flick, by no means unflawed, and perhaps not as entertaining, but which covers much of the same territory as Blue Velvet, is Eyes Wide Shut. Because it doesn't stoop to trendiness, (except maybe in its choice of lead actors), and instead focuses on the universal human condition, it will stand the test of time better.
At the least, I think the two movies would make a great double bill at a revival house near you.
a course on BV! It's his fav film, how bout that? ~AH
Lynch appeals to those with tastes for perverse weirdness. Although
BV and WAH are my two faves, I also liked The Elephant Man quite a
lot. But even I found The Amputee and Eraserhead to be a little too much.
I wonder how Lynch would fare on inblot tests? A darkly disturbed,
but brillant personality? ~AH
...my absolute favorite films of the past 15 years, an American masterpiece IMO (OK, a really DARK masterpiece). Multi-layered, open ended, drenched in dream imagery and still disturbing after all these years. (Jungians should have a field day taking this one apart.)British director Peter Greenaway once said BV was so good, he wished he'd made it himself.
Mulholland Drive may be even better.
Have you ever tried Pabst Blue Ribbon? Do they have in the UK? (best part of the movie for me)
So far out of all the Lynch movies, I like the Straight Story best. The soundtrack is played over and over here.
Also "River's Edge" from about the same time was very cool. If you would like to see some more exciting David Lynch films but are not sure which are good, I would suggest "Lost Highway" and "Mulholland Drive" as being great views. "River's Edge" was not a Lynch film, but it did have Dennis Hopper! "Wild at Heart" is equally as disgusting as "Blue Velvet", yet funny in his sick sort of way...

witness Lynch meld his fascination of textures, macabre with heart rending.

Thank You, I've been wanting to see this film again... Last time I saw it was when it first came out.
Sorry... That message number is not valid.
...looks like he's gone soft in the head.
Have to see his next to verify, though, ;0)
Frank Played by Hopper, directed by a Holy man?
But he's a great photographer!
;0)
