The Howard Hughes epic "The Aviator" led Academy Awards contenders with 11 nominations Tuesday, including best picture, plus acting honors for Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett and Alan Alda and a directing slot for Martin Scorsese. The boxing saga "Million Dollar Baby" and the J.M. Barrie tale "Finding Neverland" followed with seven nominations each, among them best picture and acting nominations for Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, Hilary Swank and Johnny Depp.
Eastwood also got a directing nomination for "Million Dollar Baby."
The other best-picture nominees were the Ray Charles portrait "Ray" and the buddy comedy "Sideways."
Along with Eastwood, Jamie Foxx also scored two nominations - as best actor for the title role in "Ray" and supporting actor as a taxi driver whose cab is hijacked by a hit man in "Collateral."
Foxx's dead-on emulation of Charles has made him the front-runner in the lead-actor category.
Follow Ups:
I have not seen all of the nominees, but I found "Sideways" to be a very well done movie, and Paul Giamatti, especially, to have given a wonderful performance. It would restore some faith in the Academy if they would choose a rather "non-mainstream" picture to recognize with an award.

But who thinks Oscar is really about the "best" film of the year?Oscar is about movie business, not movie art. I have very little faith in the Academy Awards myself, so I'm not surprised thatthe best acting performance in Sideways was not nominated. (I've seen all the Best Pic noms except Million Dollar Baby.) Although Leo is not my idea of Howard Hughes physically, he did an outstanding job in a tough role IMO (he also helped get the film made). I'd much rather see Giametti's perofrmance singled out though than Johnny Depp's so so one.
Except for the anemic Finding Neverland, I've seen much (MUCH) worse Best Pic slates than this year's.
In fact, I loved The Aviator (a great "movie" movie) and hope Marty gets his much belated, well deserved Oscar at last.
One of his co-stars said Giamatti was probably relieved that he didn't get the nom. And maybe this way, he can star in more interesting "off-beat" roles than turn into a "Movie Star".BTW- the scene where he speaks with his ex at the wedding was excruciating. He did a fantastic job.

...his ex tells him that she's pregnant - absolutely gut wrenching.I guess AMPAS can nominate talented character actors who are conventionally good looking from Sideways but they won't nominate the average looking actor whose bravura performance held the whole film together.
'Bout what I expect from them. I think they were afraid to nominate Giamatti cuz in their eyes he'd played two depressives in a row. Silly.
That is not going to happen. As history dictates money, will always flashes in Hollywood. Although Sideways is a good choice but who do they have in there as marketable as DeCaprio? If it is any consolation, Streep and Nicholson are not being nominated this year.
Even though in the distant past, some "Best Picture" nods actually went to some pretty good films.
