Finally got to see the American Version, and what a travesty! I liked the Japanese version, but Hollywood has done its evil once again in this remake. One of the main problem is the role of Susan Sarandon. In the Japanese version, the wife is a timid home-maker who has the internalize the suffering in that quirky Japanese way.
In this version, she is a strong career-woman, and her role/time has grown way too much over the original IMO. I can't believe the Hollywood "Rose scene," and I can't believe the final scene where the wife actually comes with Richard Gere.
Follow Ups:
the intimacy of dancing is the point. Where as here, peopel do the Lambada in public, it makes no sense.
(and great acting!)
Hollywood has been doing this since The Magnificent Seven "cowboyised" Kurosawas Seven Samurai
They would have been far better served to try and copy the Australian film "Strictly Ballroom"Grins
