Robert Wise directed this sprawling advaenture about a U.S. Navy gunboat in backwater China in 1926. Steve McQeen stars as a master engine mate, along with a young Candace Bergen as a missionary and Richard Crenna as the boat's captain. McQueen gets invoolved with Bergen, befriends a coolie, and gradually becomes what the crew feels is a jinx. Thre is a thrilling and well done attack on a river barracade toward the end. The 4.0 sound on the DVD has directional dialog with pin point imaging. The cinematography is sumptuous. Very enjoyable. The title comes from what the crew call themselves, a corruption of the boat's name, the San Pablo.
Follow Ups:
THis was , no doubt McQuen's best acting part. Richard Crenna was awesome too. SAw this movie on big screen when I was in college......left me quite depressed. AS Mcqueen said at the end " was almost there."
more power to you (and what type of coffee are you drinking?). Only Papillon was a more boring McQ effort.
I was drinking Chardonnay. And I have always liked this moview. BTW, I liked "Sideways" as well.
What was that 1964 or so?Great movie though, on the scale of the old epics. Really worth seeing.
Music is Emotion
Rico,I own it; I love it too! I think it is one of Steve McQueen's best performances, certainly better his work in The Great Escape (I admit to not have seen Bullitt in a long time, so I can't compare his performance in that movie).
I miss McQueen; and Bronson (his pre-Deathwish work!), and Newman (he is down to bit parts mostly), Brando . . .
all the best, townsend
Time Magazine at the time said "We are expected to believe that he is a successful architectural engineer, when he looks like he'd have trouble signing his own name".
