Just saw this one, directed by Vladimir Motyl, released in 1970.Much better than I anticipated. It reminded me of an American western (the irony of course being that it's set in eastern Russia). Fun film to watch---lots of funny moments, and plenty of action.
Follow Ups:
I kinda expected you to like it. Back when it was made, it quickly became a cult film, with popular song and one-liners becoming permanent part of folklore. There are several good actors in it. And the guy who played the customs inspector (Pavel Luspekaev) died soon after making it. If I recall correctly, he already had his feet amputated before the shooting began. He was very popular. For the main character (Anatoli Kuznetsov) I believe that was the role of this lifetime.
So... making progress with that list? What's next?
Kind of been through a whirlwind of Russian cinema this past week...Russian Ark, Andrei Rublev, Tycoon and White Sun Of the Desert...
Going to take a break and watch your Il Posto and maybe Fellini's 8 1/2
.
