At the risk of being labelled a heretic, I must say that in my opinion, Visconti's 1963 epic belongs in the ranks of "very good" films, not "great" ones. While the subject of the Prince trying to come to terms with a new Italy is apparent and the film is indeed on a "grand" scale, it seems to be a little meandering and repetitive.I would equate it with the Brunello di Montalcino we had with dinner that evening - very nice, but just not "spectacular".
On a side note- it was an interesting coincidence, the film was set in 1860, about the time the "Brunello" wine was first mentioned as a particular style, and there was mention in the film of someone heading to Montalcino for some reason. I only realized this as I was watching the movie.
Follow Ups:
...is never spectacular: exactly the same thing as with the best wines, which are great not because, while tasting fine, they have any exotic characteristic, but... because they have so few deffects, and the ones they still have are minor ones.Regards
