Talk about schmaltz...it had every cliche in the book, and then some. But, it wasn't really about boxing, was it? That was a vehicle for Clint to wax about dignity with death and familial estrangement.
Too over-the-top for me, WAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY so.
But it is good entertainment. Best film? You're kidding, right?
Follow Ups:

How about sharing a couple of recent films you DO like?
I'm sure to be forgetting many but I have a pretty poor memory (I'm sure tomorrow I'll think of a lot more...).
Swimming Pool
City of God
Man on the Train
Memento
The Quiet American
Kill Bill (1&2)
Ring (Jap. orig.)
Ghost World
Lost in Translation
Open Water.
There's 10 for you.
Let's see, using the infamous star system:Memento ***1/2/****
City of God ****/****
Swimming Pool ***/****
The Quite American ***1/2/****
Kill Bill I ****/****
Lost in Translation ***1/2/****
Ghost World ****/****
Open Water ***/****Not yet seen Kill Bill II, Ring, or Man on the Train. But there is time.
...did you see Chrisopher Nolan's (Memento) first film?
It's really worth catching and the chronological style pre-echoes Memento.
It's called The Follower, in b&w - very hard, original & manipulative.
I wonder what his Batman - The Beginning will be like?
;0)
run to the vid store and get After Life, A Taste of Cherry, and Cold Fever.
(I saw pre-Memento and was a bit disappointed; on the other hand, it showed the director had grown.)

We do like some of the same films after all...Swimming Pool
City Of God
Man on the Train
Memento
Lost In Translation
The Quiet American
Ghost World
gentleman of great culture, deep understanding, and almost impeccable taste :--}).
...despite my great culture, deep understanding and nearly impeccable taste, this cinemagurl still admires and likes both The Aviator and Maria Full of Grace. ;-)Fave film of 2004: The Return
I have not seen all the films on your list - and while I have a few above it - Million Dollar Baby is better than the Aviator - so far they're the only two of the five I've seen.MDB is so far the best Eastwood Movie I've seen - - much better than Mystic River. Shmaltz? Yes so what? Tube amps have euphony and people like it like me.
I have not seen those films, so can't comment, but I do get that sense that you had done your fair share of Hollywood bashing lately... he-he...How dare you to not like the Oscar darling!
Likely in a couple of years I will see it, so I will tell you then.
Next you will tell us you actually didn't like the LOTR. That will mean the completion of your decadence cycle.
one hundred words.
I loathe Star Wars and, since in my experience folks like both mythologies, I steered clear. Since my brother-in-law is a true fanatic of both cults, I'll be forced to indulge him and see at least one LOTR. I detest the look.--that Matrix-blue-black-brown crap. And the Tyler girl? Don't get me started...
I actually don't have problem with the first Star War... but it HAD to stop there. One was a curiosity, what followed was a disgrace to everyone. With the LOTR I am one small step (as in "one small step for man, one giant.... for mankind..." remember?) ahead of you, as I actually sat through about 20 minutes total of that munumental pile of dreck.
Sorry, not used to posting.
Agree with you Tinear on both Million Dollar Baby and the movies you did like. Unfortunately, it is the kind of movie you know is going to get the Oscar.I saw the movie last Saturday with my wife. She told me that it was unusual to have the protagonist die. I told her that Maggie wasn't the protagonist, she was the plot device.
In the rest of the world good people still die at alarming rate.
