Since you asked below, here's my take on a few of the other Russian films you suggested:Russian Ark: this one is brilliant in so many ways. An interesting and creative way to pay homage to the Hermitage. I was just as captivated by the "making of" documentary as the actual piece. My favorite scene was the stairway at the end...
Andrei Rublev: I think I will be digesting this for a while---the imagery was almost overwhelming at times. I will probably try to watch it again after I've had time to think about it. The bell-making scene was by far my favorite, almost a film in itself...
Tycoon: a tough little mobster film, with all the right twists and plenty of Russian politics. And who wouldn't enjoy watching Mariya Mironova?
"Man With A Movie Camera" is next on the list...
Follow Ups:
Russian Ark - I don't remember that stairway... I think I need to look again. All those interiors are of course just way too familiar, and I will have a date with them in two months again... I can't wait. You are right - Rublev is not the type of a movie you watch once and move on. You will need to see it several times, and I don't know how familiar you are with the history or Russia during that period, but it is mandatory for better understanding of the film.
Masha Mironova is likely the daughter of the late Andrey Mironov - I need to check that with my wife. That film is all about entertainment, and it delivers.
There is another film of that type, called Night Watch, and it is not quite here yet, but when it comes I will make sure to get it, it had created quite an impact, and Hollywood will be making a sequel - imagine THAT! I think Brad Pitt will be in it.
