Yes, a hackneyed plot and the love stuff has been done before...but this time it is very well done, indeed.
Topher does an excellent job and Scarlett is...well, Scarlett is Scarlett---and that's about as good as actresses get these days.
Randy Quaid doesn't embarrass himself and makes a convincing middle-aged guy with lots of rough spots.
Go see this one.

Tin,I saw this very average film with Lou and even she disliked it.
#1. Scarlett is not a good actress and doesn't even hold a candle to someone like Hillary Swank, or Blanchet (when she is in a good role), or Brenda Blethynth (however you spell her name).
You watch "Lost in Translation" and tell me that she even comes close to Hillary Swank in "MDB".
Randy Quaid is a MUCH better actor than his brother. Dennis was decent in "Breaking Away" but it's been all downhill since then.

Currently watching Seijun's "Tokyo Drifter"

I have never seen a movie starring Scarlett. I have heard some of the hype surrounding her - can she really act? Or is she merely another pretty girl with nice lips and a healthy chest?
you can't tell me that he wasn't excellent as Doc Holladay in Tombstone.
Den,I liked him in Breaking Away and the Right Stuff.
Gordo Cooper!!!!!

is very hard to portray a "regular" person realistically on the big screen. It's much easier and certain to get awards if an actor can portray someone with a physical imperfection, a strong emotional one, or, best of all, both.
Hillary does a great boxer imitation, yeah, but let's see her w/out the gimmicks like all the physical exercise, big ol' southern accent stuff, or portraying a guy. (Last year's female Oscar winner made herself ugly, played a serial killer and....jackpot.)
Scarlett was in a fairly crummy movie about Vermeer recently and she was quite excellent in her understated way. You can't see her acting, unlike many others.
(1) I agree. Scarlett is a very good actress, who, I believe, is yet to hit her stride. She has had a minor hiccup along the way (The Perfect Score), but she was pretty good.(2) Your comment about Charlize Theron merely putting on weight and makeup for "Monster" is totally wrong, and leads me to believe that you never saw the documentary "Aileen, Confessions of a Serial Killer." If you saw that film, you will see that in "Monster" Theron did more than simply add weight and loose the makeup. She became Aileen Wournos, and appeared to channel the serial killer. Before Theron did the role, you could never have convinced me that ANY actress could convincingly pull off that performance. Now that I have seen both films, which is a must if you want to appreciate Theron's performance, I must say that no actress other than Theron could have pulled that off.
It is one thing for an actor to "loose" themself in a fictional charachter, for which there is no reference. But to so convingly play a real person, for whom there are many references, and you either achieve the charachter or you do not, is impressive.
