One of my all time favs, and I saw it (for about the 10th time) last night. Not exactly sure why I like this movie so much. While I'm not a baby boomer, I do identify with the characters' conflicts regarding a deterioration of integrity/enthusiasm/optimism post-college. One of the things that struck me as I was watching last night was how much I enjoyed Jeff Goldblum's role. Normally, I can not stand Goldblum, but he plays this part in TBC so convincingly. His character describes himself as an investigative journalist, but in reality he writes for People magazine. He reveals himself to be an ass in almost every scene. William Hurt is great as well.I have also seen Secaucas Seven (sp?) which has a similar theme as TBC. But I didn't care for SS too much.
Follow Ups:
this is the best American film showing what it was all about. I also lived in Savannah for many years and visited Beaufort SC where it was filmed, many times. The story was told that Tom Berenger married the woman that was the real estate agent for the great white house but at a local shrimp shack (that may have been the name) I was told she was a local waitress.
Anyhow, I thought Berenger was excellent, as was Glenn Close. This is one of those movies that made a startling number of careers.
I agree about Secaucus Seven..and I'm a big fan of Sayles. Yawnn......
opening scene: body in coffin showing sutures on wrist (men know the way to go. Never clot up that way) was Kevin Costner. His scenes and oodles more, didn't make it in the final cut.
One time, loooong ago, was more than enough. But I would watch it again for a good fee.
which has almost the entire cast of The Big Chill plus several additions; the film has the dubious distinction of being the highest budget Western ever filmed
A commercial disaster and critically panned on release; I also have no idea why I like it so muchGrins
Post Siverado, Kevin Costner has never shown anywhere near the energy he exhibited in this movie. Prolly as likeable in Tin Cup, but thats about it. He and Glover made this movie for me.
