The kid who plays the quarterback: mark my words, he'll be huge.
Now, what the hell was the casting person thinking of when he/she cast Billy Bob in that role? And who rote it?
Since we didn't get to know the coach, who cared what happened? And...has there ever been a less dramatic buildup to a game climax?
Note to casting folks: Billy Boy ain't the hero type. What next...Steve Buscemi "stretching" to play a Senator?
Follow Ups:
BBT's performance as Coach Gaines did seem a tad underdeveloped, but I thought it was fine for what it was. The film was really about the 3 players, specifically Mike Winchell, Boobie Miles and Don Billingsly. I picked up the book, and plan to start it this weekend. The kid who played Boobie Miles was terrific, as well-the scene where he cleans out his locker while exuding (false) bravado and then breaks down in his uncle's car was heartrending.
I can report that the passion for high school football in Texas is exactly as portrayed in the film-I attended college in Abilene in the late 70's/early 80's and went to a number of games at Abilene's Shotwell stadium with several college pals. Saw the Permian Panthers absolutely demolish Abilene High, too.
He's also lined up for a part in the upcoming movie based on the unhero, Anthony Swofford's whine, "Jarhead".

his character was the glue that bound the story together like Gene Hackman in Hossiers. The person who rote(sic) the story adapted it from the novel of the same name. No suspense before the final game? Guess we saw it a little differently. To each his own.
and faceless. You knew they'd beat them all once they got to state. The eventual champions also had no identity. How can you have suspense with no adversary?
Billy Bob had zero worthwhile scenes away from the football. He did his usual non-acting, check out the scene when he lets the Bobbie convince him to start. Zero emotion at that moment.
I don't think Billy Bob has Hackman's range or power. BB is a non-hero, nihilist type...His best role was his first, One False Move (?).
and followed that season live anyway. I'd agree that Hackman was better than BBT. Hoosiers might be the best sports movie of all time. BBT's best? goddamn Bad(er) Santa is a personal fav although I missed One False Move (or forgot it?). Loved Slingblade as well and liked Pushing Tin (w/John Cusack)...By the way, and I may be stating the obvious, but in real life, Boobie tore his knee up in practice, not in a game. And he wasn't particularly well liked on the team. His cockiness, portrayed in the show quite well, wasn't temepered with humour, in real life he had cockiness and arrogance.
And thanks for the info.
We'll try to do it.
...understated coach performance was brilliant.
