The nerd who gets a fairly attractive girl...and can dance like Travolta. It just doesn't work. The director/writers took the easy way out by making him stand out in some way that kids would appreciate. That's not the way it is, mostly. Kids get picked on and that's their whole life. Some of them get so fucked up they take a gun to school and indiscriminately start shooting.
Once again, a massive cop out that could have said something meaningful instead of being a slightly more serious and less imaginative high school version of "Nerds."

And yet somehow I couldn't turn it off. I found it entertaining in a way that I can't readily explain. I found it compelling and heartwarming in a weird way. I'm 40.
Not piss in the pants but well worth watching(twice). And I am 44 years old.Python-like in Napoleons self-effacing humor.
I wonder if too many try to read too much into this [first time] movie. The writer, director wrote it to star his college roomate. I found it entertaining...of course, I am familiar with the cultural and geographic references, and I didn't look for anything more than I was given.Do you like Hal Hartley's work?
I like the way he made the central characters 'Hartleyesque' and all the surrounding characters more 'normally dimensioned'.
For teenagers - Napoleon Dynamite
For college age kids and over - Garden State
For adults - SidewaysThey have a lot in common and appeal only to certain age groups (age, of course is a state of mind).
... and hit him in the face with it, when he was riding up to the house on his bike- I nearly pised my pants. I kept rewinding that part to watch over and over. Don't why i found it so funny but i did!the movie on a whole though did not make me laugh much.
my 16 yr old niece loves it and has watched it 20 times she says.
This movie should have been a tragedy. A kid near where I was living at that time took a couple of guns to school (after he killed his parents) in large part, he said, because of the constant harrassment he received.
Other kids have said the same as rationale for blowing away classmates: it's the constant bullying.
I wonder if the director and those brothers who wrote this thing have ever heard of Columbine or the other school slaughters?
It's just freakin' funny, and that's all. Most of the humor can be found in the fact that watered down euphamisms are used in the place of an expected curse word or two. It's just a funny movie, that's all... I think I had to change my shorts after the first time I watched it...
Cheers,
Chris
...because this became a teenage cult movie. Adults just don't get it. Just about every teenager I've talked to loves the movie and has seen it multiple times. They identify with Napoleon. Some have even memorized the lines. The local mall sold out of "Pedro for President" T-shirts months ago. Napoleon is a hero to them because he's a nerd, get's harassed and doesn't let it bother him. He's so uncool - he's too cool to care. In the end he wins. It doesn't get much better thn that. How was your high school experience?
which said that although the movie started slowly it was a good one. I kept waiting for something funny to happen but it never did in my view.while i am a relatively old fart (43) for this type of genre I don`t think its my age that stopped me from finding it funny as I have found many other movies targetted for this age group most amusing. With such a flat script my guess is the popularity for this movie is attributable to the actors all of whom were very well cast.
