pretty lightweight, if this is any indication...This could not have been much worse unless it was 132 minutes of an explication of Archimedes Principle.
Sean Penn, Elizabeth Hurley, and Sarah Polley. Hmmmm.
The movie tells parallel stories, one in the present and the other in the 19th century, and, strange to say, the period one is quite compelling. The jerking back and forth, and the incredible vapidity of the modern-day dialogue make many scenres a laugher.
Worth seeing, however, for a couple of scenes with Ms. Polley and another blond character: perhaps the only truly sensual scene I've encountered in film in, oh...God, I can't remember since when.
Follow Ups:
The level of talent in this film raised my hopes. The problem is that I never felt there was a smooth connection between the historical story and the modern story. I would have preferred that the modern story get lost, and spend the time on the historical story. Every time the film jumped to the modern story, I was disappointed. But then, as Rico writes, we would never have seen the lovely Elizabeth Hurley topless.
One of the very pretentious film....Nothing new under the sun...Form over contend.
Hey Tin? What did you say?
I thought it was very original, with Benicio giving a very good performance. Penn's character and the story with the mom was a bit much but it wasn't a great film....merely very interesting.
So we agree at last, it was not a great film....
This is based on Anita Shreve's novel of the same title. Incredibly, a character upon which the entire plot in the book depends is left OUT of the movie. But seeing Elizaveth Hurley topless almost makes up for it.Three other Shreve books have been made into movies or TV movies.
