Man oh man, would I like to see this movie redone with a cast of actors who can act. Burt Lancaster: good looking guy, but can't act his way out of a frying pan. The rest of the cast: horrible. Anna Magnani!! Now that is acting. Bella. One stunning performance.

Hey, I'm not picking on good ole Burt. Swimmner? Great. Birdman of A...z, another great one. Movies that is. Acting performance? To each his own. Not my cup of java...Imagine Montgommery Cliff playing the birdman? Gregory Peck? Jimmy Cagny? Charles Laughton? Jimmy Stewart? Just a mere few who.. you dirty rat...The Swimmer?-- that may be a hard one for the beach scene. Burt did have some body. Gymnast when he was young. Well, you could always edit that scene...lol..
Anna Magnani is worth the price of admission. Her performance in "The Rose Tattoo" is one of the great performances in the history of film. She is magnificent. As for the film - it's very good but no classic.Another film starring Burt Lancaster that features a bravura performance by an actress is "Come Back, Little Sheba." Shirley Booth's tour-de-force performance in that film won her a well-deserved Oscar. Burt plays an loser alcoholic self-pitying failure and he is quite good. Shirley Booth, however, steals the show. (She had won a Tony for the same role on Broadway)
As for Mr. Lancaster, I think he was a very good actor when he wanted to be. His performance in "The Birdman of Alcatraz" is about as good as it gets. It's an excellent film and Lancaster is riveting.
I think you are being too hard on uncle Burt, although his acting CAN be heavy-handed, and Anna is of course always magnificent, but the film is a snoozer - I could never finish it, and I tried more than once.
I can think of oodles of great actors who CAN'T act: Richard Widmark, Robert Mitchum, John Wayne, Charlton Heston to name a few. Great screen presence has nothing to do with acting ability. Never has, never will. IMHO....peace, warrenP.S. I love Burt, BTW. Have seen most of his pictures. Doen't mean he can act. Atlantic City (near the end of his life) was his best acting.
and I think that eclipses his performance in Atlantic City; much as I love these both
Susan Sarandon is a knockout in that too
