films of all time. Dustin as a Native American? Only Tony Curtis's turn as the slave boy in "Spartacus" was as big a hoot of a miscasting.
One can only wish the director's direct antecedents had been at Little Big Horn.
Follow Ups:
that was a howlingly pathetic performance in what was a great movie with otherwise fantastic performances.I know you've already been told this, but Dustin Hoffman's character was a WHITE MAN you knucklehead, who was captured and raised by Indians. Repeat after me, HE WASN'T BORN AN INDIAN ;->
In what remains, for me, one of the greatest Westerns ever produced. Memorable characters and great dialogue, much of it lifted directly from the book. (One of my favorites is from the cook, Po Campo- "my wife is in hell, where I sent her. She made good biscuits, but her behavior was terrible".)Robert Duval's 2 greatest performance are Augustus McCrae and the preacher in The Apostle, IMO.
What about Colonel Kilgore in "Apocalypse Now"? And his marine in "The Great Santini"?
Ah, 'The Great Santini', very good call. His Bull Meechum was abrasive and and unforgettable. I am still amazed to this day at the landmark films he has had either key or small parts in.Tender Mercies
Apocalypse Now
Network
The Conversation
The Godfather
THX 1138
MASHTrue Grit
Bullitt
To Kill a Mockingbird
I need to watch that one again-given the current downward spiral of television, it might well be more timely than ever.He was great as sleazy sportswriter Max Mercy in The Natural, too.
Duvall ought to get a lifetime achievement award from the Academy.
You obviously have not seen Burgess Meredith as an Indian in Stay Away, Joe.
of Berger's novel is to show the entire panorama of the west by having a caucasian adopted by the Pawnee and then switch back and forth between both worlds. The Hoffman character is not SUPPOSED to be an indian.

you got that right, Rico. That was the whole idea. Could you have gotton a better face? I heard, originally they wanted the Little Big Man, rather than scalp his enemies, to circumcise them. The Jewish contingent was in arms...lol..
my only objection is the lousy filming of the Little Big Horn battle which is inexcusable given the quality of the rest of the film
This is often cited as an example of cinematic undershooting. Despite valient editing efforts, there simply was not enough film coverage to make sense of the battle, so the entire sequence is out of sync with the rest of the film.
of his persona.
Ratso and the Graduate...now an Indian?
If he didn't look and act so Jewish, I suppose he might have had a chance. But then, he wouldn't be Dustin, would he?
Share how you stayed awake, please. Only Jeremiah Johnson was more tedious.
