This time through I paid particular attention to the way the cinematographer captured the actual color of the L.A. sky at night. I also was struck by how believable the characters are. The DVD supplements note the extraordinary amount of physical and mental preparation both Cruise and Foxx underwent and it really shows. Each has the moves and the "look" of the man he is playing. Cruise is not a favorite of mine but for me this may be his most convincing role. Director Mann has added some new twists to the tired buddy action flick. The sound of the gunfire in DTS 5.1 will test the limits of your system. And I still love the Miles Davis sequence.
Follow Ups:
and wrongfully so.
I can't remember one scene, and I saw it in a theatre, ear-splitting volume and 60-ft. tall bodies and all.
The problem is there is NO "antagonist" for Cruise to play off of. We know the stiffs will be offed, cleverly of course, and that is what the success of the film hinges on. I didn't find the killings very original or filmed particularly well.
You want to see a similar film done imaginatively? Rent "Nikita (is it Ma Femme...?)."
and certainly at the top of my list:Miami Vice
Manhunter
Last of the Mohicans
Heat
Collateral
.
"Where are we going? And what am I doing in this hand basket?"
I find it better than 'Heat' and the soundtrack by Tangerine Dream just furthers the atmosphere. I actually think it's his best film.
Couldn't agree with you any more...he seems to make a lot of films that I like...I feel "Mohicans" is top notch directing and my favorite "Mann"
Grins
Assuming it's the one with Tuesday Weld?
Michal Mann produced and directed Thief . and in addition did the screenplay from the book The Home Invaders by Frank Hohimer. The movie was the basic progenitor of the style developed by Mann in Miami Vice .
Karel Reisz's filmography (IMDB) is here,
for me was how they made that nightclub look so huge. The actual location is a moderate-sized cafe in LA WITHOUT any dance floor, which I frequent, and the movie made it look about 20 times bigger than actual!! Ah, the magic of Hollywood..I did enjoy the movie, partly due to the familiar LA scenes..
LA was one of the charactors. I live here too and never have I seen it so beautiful, unique and frightening as in this and other Mann movies like "Heat".
Music is Emotion
I should probably see this movie. Not sure what everybody's hangup is with this guy. I think people are still typecasting him as Mr. Risky Business. He was top notch in Rain Man and Minority Report. And he was pretty good in Interview with a Vampire but then we are back to the 'psycho killer' role I guess. I actually use that role to define my favorite actors list(Walken, Nicholson, Bronson, David Warner).
I liked this movie and agree with your feelings on Cruise. Generally I'm not a big fan, but I felt there was little to pick on in this movie. I may even buy this one and have... wow, like 15 or so movies. :)
Maybe he should always be a pathological killer.

It's the only Cruise film I've seen during which I never once found myself muttering "God, what a lousy actor he is".Foxx was terrific, and I loved the way Mann captured the look and feel of Los Angeles.

I did not see the film only some previewas I am allergic to Tom, but tell me why the " killer " has to tell to the taxi driver his job?
Or did I missed something?
I suggest you only pay attention to explinations that come from people who have seen the movie. Much higher likelyhood that the explination will actually reflect the content of the movie.
...and see how far it gets you.
Saw the movie. His character has to confide in the taxi driver 'cause the taxi driver saw him murder someone. It's part of the hit man's personality, and is explained well in the movie. It's really a pretty good movie, Cruise's performance is quirky and good, and Foxx is excellent.
Well should he have not killed the taxy driver then?
Well any way thank you.
He needed the taxi driver because the driver knew his way around L.A. and the fastest routes. Later on he does try to kill Foxx but it is unknown as to whether that was his plan all along.
It was alluded to, earlier in the flick, that a cabbie had been murdered in Oakland. I forget the dialogue, but one came away from that discussion knowing that it was a similar setup and Cruise was the one who had done Oakland as well. It definitely added to the suspense knowing that he was gonna use Foxx up and then off him.Dammn all this discussion is gonna force me to buy this. Helluva movie IMHO
Usially the murderer talks at the end - but of course they all MUST talk.I presume this was Mann's attempt at getting away from the stereotype? I am not even smiling here.
Bad films always need the talker, good ones manage without it.
Speaking in general terms, of course. I did not see this one, nor intend to see it, as Cruise's acting is as attractive as the cow vomit. One of the worst actors of the last decades, and quite prolific to boot! Hand me that bottle of laxative!
I think you would be surprised at how good and convincing Cruise is in this role.
I very well might be surprised, but not on my money. If one day it hits the free channels then we'll see.
You have an try of an explanation at last. I already tought it was even dumber.
But how realistic can be this? A killer telling....
It made very good sense. And Foxx's reaction upon learning, was wholly convincing and I'm convinced that was THE scene in sealing his Academy Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Really, this is quite an unexpectedly excellent movie. Of course, your knowing the whole movie ( or most of it ) at this point will take some of the suspense away. We went into it knowing nothing.
