In what remains, for me, one of the greatest Westerns ever produced. Memorable characters and great dialogue, much of it lifted directly from the book. (One of my favorites is from the cook, Po Campo- "my wife is in hell, where I sent her. She made good biscuits, but her behavior was terrible".)
Robert Duval's 2 greatest performance are Augustus McCrae and the preacher in The Apostle, IMO.

    Ah, 'The Great Santini', very good call. His Bull Meechum was abrasive and and unforgettable. I am still amazed to this day at the landmark films he has had either key or small parts in.

      I need to watch that one again-given the current downward spiral of television, it might well be more timely than ever.
      He was great as sleazy sportswriter Max Mercy in The Natural, too.
      Duvall ought to get a lifetime achievement award from the Academy.
