Just saw this old chestnut Polanski film from the early 60's...black and white...subtitles from the Polish...was mightily impressed...this was Roman's first film I believe and I had recently just seen the "Pianist" for the first time. I'd forgotten what a quality director this guy is IMHO.

see it again. For me, it is about as perfect as a horror movie ever has been. From the 4 main actors to the music to the clothes to the masterful visual style. And the story, which up to the very end, could work as simple paranoia. And the somewhat over the top ending. I like most of Polanski's movies, but this was the best.
rosemarys baby is the most overated movie of all time. horror movie with no scares, suspense movie with no suspense, thriller with no thrills. dull and boring with weak performances by cassavettes and mia farrow with her bad haircut. maybe i'm not religous enough to make me afraid for mia.the movie secret ceremony with mia farrow is better than this you hardly realize it is mia in it. bad movie bad book. rhu
Most overrated movie of all time...pretty strong stuff. I've got it on DVD, last time I watched it was Halloween. I've seen all of Polanski's movies and Rosemary's Baby is easily my favorite. Probably seen it 7 or 8 times. And I'm not at all religious. And I never read the book.
I thought it was one huge bore based on a stupid story. A complete waste of time. One simply should not put it in the same sentence with Repulsion.
Knife in the Water, which was not his first film, is a very good solid work. It was later remade into Dead Calm... a real dreck.Pianist I could live without - I am getting more and more irritated by it, and its star.
Polanski gave us some good works, but given his past I didn't even go to see the Pianist in the theater.
What was Polanski's first film? Something not released in the USA? I've only seen Adrian Brody in "The Pianist" and thought he gave a powerful masterly performance....makes me want to see him in something else....I am lukewarm on Rosemary's Baby...I really don't care for anything with Mia Farrow and the dialogue actually repeated much from the book verbatim...I thought Cassavettes was over the top...this must be Polanski's "Hollywood" type movie.
You can see his filmography here on imdb.com I didn't check on which ones were released here.
A Pure Formality?
I liked it. But that was years ago.
