I'd say "Harper" "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" and "The Long Hot Summer."
Follow Ups:
One of the best scenes in movie history...I cry every time I watch it...Newman should have won Best Actor for "Cat" he was robbed again for "The Verdict"...For me the name Paul Newman is synonomous with CLASS!...not to mention the fact that my father looked like Newman...
I forget the name of the flick, but he plays a carpenter or some kind of handyman. This is before Melanie G. got those big ol' fish lips too........

Its hard to believe that folks would even consider major cosmetic surgery after looking at a few of those before and after shots. One of the most unnerving are the Bert Reynolds shots. His face is now pulled so tight he has a permanent grin. Yikes!
...Hud, Cool Hand Luke, the T. Williams adaptations and The Verdict all contain great Newman performances.I find Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid unwatchable.
I love Newman in some of his later stuff - Sully Sullivan in Nobody's Fool and the gangster chief John Rooney in Road To Perdition.

Who owns the Chiefs?????Tosh Braden
"I think this place is restricted Wang, so don't tell them you're Jewish"

about Brando? Penn? Nicholson?
You do know Brando was a stage star beforehand?
How's about ol' dead James Dean?
Richard Burton was a star as well...

although I don`t think Penn belongs in your group because like Pacino he`s still an actor, not a star. at least in my view.Brando was a great actor IMO but I don`t think he became so much a star as he became a carticuture of himself (as a star?) I would say the same thing about Burton. His "acting" was really over the top once he became a star.
As stars always brings an element of their own charisma and personality to their roles they play, greatness is never achieved.
He's become a one trick pony......

The perfect anti-hero despicable drunk who had you rooting for him in his quest for personal redemption. Hey, if there is a klinker role in his career, I can't think of it.
.
I'd add "Hud", "Cool Hand Luke" and Fast Eddie Falco in "The Hustler".
in "Hombre."
